Women Of History: Our Inspiration, Our Aspiration, Our Lifelong Teachers, Their Legacy!

This week, I turn the focus on someone closer to home. She was our first Nobel prize winner, and she is one of us! A product of our East African education, cultures and much more. It is certainly worth being proud of—at least I am.

I am, literally, feeling chills writing about her and her impressive accomplishments!

She was a fighter for democracy, social and environmental justice! Among her many accomplishments, Professor Wangari Maathai started the well-known, Greenbelt Movement that is still very much alive today, thanks to her family. Incidentally, if you wish to learn more about her organization or donate, check out this website: .

This organization has done wondrous works in progressing women’s rights, climate change advocacy and so much more. This bright spirit had vision, and did everything in her power to realize it into existence, fighting against odds. She wanted us to be independent, to be true, to be fierce, to love nature’s gifts, this world, because it is the only one we have. We are to take care of ourselves, mind, body and spirit, as well as each other.

“I wonder what all this has to do with LMK.” That’s what you’re wondering, isn’t it.

Well, I will say that this our organization is part of her legacy, indirectly. When I think about leaving legacies, I, sometimes, fail to see the far-reaching effects they have on everyone touched, like a ripple effect.

Our Executive Director of LMK was a student of hers, many moons ago. Yet, whenever he talks about his experience of having her as a professor, it is as though he lives it every day. Far-reaching, yes. But, we are a part of her legacy, in some small way.

She unfortunately died from ovarian cancer, and I think as we know, cancer is quickly becoming a matter of public health concern!

Check us out, let us know how we can support you in ensuring that you screen early and know your status. With an in-house medical doctor, you will learn about screening, what the results mean to you, and how you can continue to stay healthy!
